Melencolia I. 1514 Dürer engraving

The meaning of Melencolia I have been a puzzle for mankind during the last 504 years. The most intriguing work of the Renaissance's genius: Albretch Dürer.

In this article, attention is focused on two elements that are the key to understand Dürer's work. The first one, is the mathematical 180 degrees symmetry depicted in Melencolia I. The second are the mistakes that Dürer intentionally produced in the engraving.

Three element in the engraving have a 180 degree symmetry:

1- The S on the title of the engraving (separating the melencolia word from the roman number one)
2- The faces of the polyhedron (Not all).
3-  And more difficult to observe and prove, the magic square (see the other entry in this blog about the subject of the Dürer magic square..

The errors intentionally engraved by the artist:

1-The misspelling of the word melancolia just in plain sight (Melencolia I)
2-An error in one of the number of the magic square that was corrected but is visible
3-the number 9, into the magic square is inverted.

The 180 symmetry depicts the battle between positive and negative forces. Chaos and order. Life and death. Perfection and imperfection. Happiness and sadness.

Imperfection is depicted in the engraving by the Düre's errors (intentionally).

Perfection is depicted by the mathematical elements of the engraving: Numbers and geometry.The 180 degree symmetry in the magic square.

In this way, Melencolia is the Dürer 's fight between perfection and imperfection. The most deep feeling of Dürer is to gain perfection through his art. His battle against his human condition (human errors). 

But the feeling of defeat in Dürer is present: a sadness look in the angel. An important event was happen in the life of the artist in 1514: the dead of his mother.

Coincidence or not? The superman logo emerges on Dürer work. A combination of the face of the polyhedron and the S of melencolia titles. Also, a bat evokes Batman logo. Good and evil battle.
